Was ein Händler dafür braucht

Agentic commerce describes purchases in which an AI model takes over part or all of the buying process on a person's behalf. The customer states a wish, such as "two kilos of espresso beans for my portafilter machine, no more than 20 euros per kilo". The AI model searches for suitable products, compares prices, reviews and delivery times and suggests a shortlist. Depending on the platform, it also places the order itself.

From search box to conversation

In classic online retail, customers do every step themselves: search, click through results, open stores, compare, add to basket, check out. In agentic commerce, that journey shrinks to a single sentence. This changes who reads your product page. It is no longer just a person, but first a machine that decides whether your offer makes the shortlist at all.

An AI model only recommends what it clearly understands. And it buys where buying is frictionless.

Three stages worth telling apart

  1. Discovery: The AI model finds and recommends products and links to the store. This already works in many AI models today.
  2. Ordering in the chat: The AI model builds the basket and places the order without the customer visiting the store. OpenAI introduced "Instant Checkout" and the Agentic Commerce Protocol for this in September 2025[2], Google the Universal Commerce Protocol in 2026[3].
  3. Autonomous buying: The customer sets rules, for example brand, maximum price and timing, and the agent buys on its own as soon as the conditions are met. Google's Agent Payments Protocol is designed for these cases[3].

The first stage is everyday reality. The second is developing right now, with setbacks: OpenAI scaled back buying directly in the chat in spring 2026 and now relies more on merchant apps and referrals to the store. The third stage is only just beginning.

What a merchant needs

  • Machine-readable product data: unique identifiers (GTIN), complete attributes, current prices and stock levels.
  • An interface for ordering: through which an AI model can handle basket, shipping, taxes and the order, connected to your shop system or ERP.
  • Secure payment processing: through your payment service provider, with tokens instead of card details.
  • Ongoing maintenance: The standards are changing fast. If you connect today, you will need to keep up tomorrow.

Why this matters now

Morgan Stanley estimates that by 2030 around 10 to 20 percent of online spending in the US could run through AI agents[4]. In Germany, buying directly inside an AI model has not been switched on yet; it is expected from 2027. The foundation for it, clean data and an ordering interface, can be built today, though. It already pays off at the first stage, because well-structured products are recommended more often and more accurately.
