For an AI model to order from a merchant, both have to speak the same language. Protocols define that language. Several have emerged since 2025, some competing, some complementary. This overview reflects the state of play in October 2026. Things are changing fast.
| Protocol | Behind the standard | Covers | Status autumn 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) | OpenAI and Stripe | Product feeds, checkout, payment handover | Feeds for product search in ChatGPT active; buying directly in the chat scaled back since March 2026 |
| Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | Google with commerce partners | Basket, checkout, merchant remains the seller | Introduced in January 2026; checkout expands first to Canada and Australia, later to the United Kingdom |
| Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) | Mandates for autonomous purchases, digital receipt | First features announced for the "Gemini Spark" agent | |
| Visa Intelligent Commerce, Trusted Agent Protocol | Visa | Recognising trusted agents, authenticating payments | First live payments at European merchants in July 2026 |
| Mastercard Agent Pay | Mastercard | Tokenised payments by registered agents | First fully agentic payment in Europe reported with Worldline and ING |
ACP: the pioneer that changed course
OpenAI and Stripe introduced the Agentic Commerce Protocol in September 2025 together with "Instant Checkout" in ChatGPT[1]. Merchants were to provide their products via feed and accept orders directly in the chat. In March 2026, OpenAI announced it would scale back buying in the chat. Since then, purchases have run more through merchant apps in ChatGPT or via referral to the store[2][3]. ACP product feeds remain the basis for being found in ChatGPT[3].
UCP and AP2: Google's two-track approach
Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol in January 2026[7]. At Google I/O 2026 it followed up with "Universal Cart", a basket that spans Search, Gemini, YouTube and Gmail[4]. Payment runs via UCP, either with Google Pay or on the website of the merchant, who remains the "merchant of record". According to heise, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce and Stripe sit on the standard's tech council[4]. Google has not yet named a date for Germany.
The Agent Payments Protocol complements UCP for autonomous purchases: users set brands, products and maximum amounts in advance, and the agent buys only within that mandate and creates a permanent receipt[4].
Visa and Mastercard: the payments side
The card networks solve a different problem: how does a merchant know whether an agent is acting on behalf of a real customer, and how is the payment authorised securely? On 2 July 2026, Visa reported the first live payments by AI agents at several European merchants. Participants include Commerzbank, ING, Klarna and Revolut. According to Visa, merchants need no new infrastructure but must be able to tell trusted agents apart from bots[5]. Worldline, ING and Mastercard also report a fully agentic payment in Europe[6].
What this means for you
- Don't bet on a single standard. The protocols overlap. A clean internal interface that can connect to several protocols is more robust than a single integration.
- Data first. Every approach requires structured, current product data.
- Payments through existing partners. Your payment service provider is the most likely route to agentic payments.
