Was die Teilnahme kostet

Every new sales channel raises two questions: what does it cost to take part? And what does it cost not to? With agentic commerce, the second question is the bigger one, because the effect creeps in. A store that an AI model doesn't understand isn't rated worse. It simply doesn't show up.

What taking part costs

Cost itemTypeWhat it involves
Data preparationone-off, then ongoingGTINs, attributes, variants, feeds. Often the biggest item, but it also improves your store and marketplace listings.
Ordering interfaceone-offA checkout interface following the platforms' protocols, connected to your store or ERP.
Payment feesper transactionYour payment service provider's usual terms.
Platform feesper transaction, depending on the platformFor ChatGPT's Instant Checkout, since scaled back, a fee of 4 % per order was reported[3]. For discovery and referral to your store, currently none[3][4].
OperationsongoingMonitoring, updates for new protocol versions, fixing feed errors.

Concrete amounts depend on the size of your range, data quality and system landscape. After an analysis, the effort can usually be scoped well.

What it costs to miss out

The counter-calculation is a model, not a forecast. It rests on three assumptions:

  1. Agents' share of online retail: We take Morgan Stanley's range for 2030, 10 percent in the base case and 20 percent in the optimistic case[1], and let the share rise step by step from 2026.
  2. Loss rate: the share of agent-driven purchases that a merchant without a connection loses, because the AI model doesn't recommend it or can't order there. You set this value yourself in the calculator.
  3. Growth: your online revenue keeps growing at the rate you set.

With the example values, €2 million online revenue, 8 percent growth and a 60 percent loss rate, around €163,000 of annual revenue is at risk in 2030 in the base case, and around €327,000 in the optimistic case.

The competitive effect

The calculation underestimates one point: the revenue doesn't disappear; it goes to competitors that an AI model recommends. Bain expects that by 2030 up to a quarter of online transactions in the US will be initiated, influenced or completed by agents[2]. Merchants who supply well-structured data early build up reviews, order history and trust with the platforms. That lead is hard to catch up with later.
